About Johnny...

I grew up on Teesside in the 70's when the clothes and the skies were brown. Since then I've lived in over 20 different places from the North of Scotland to Southern California during which time, I have never had a paid job, nor have I owned a suit. How on earth I've actually survived is sometimes a bit of a mystery. My writing career began in November 2000 when I started writing for Football365. My 'A Very Northern Mind' column gained me some degree of notoriety. Some loved it, some hated it and were not slow to tell me. 18 years later I was short-listed for Writer of the Year by the Football Supporters Federation, so I must've been doing something right.

I've written for a lot of different publications and newspapers over the years. In 2010 my book We Ate All The Pies was long-listed for the William Hill Sports Book of the Year. Ten years later Can We Have Our Football Back? was long-listed for Football Book of the year on the Telegraph Sports Book Awards. I've also done Edinburgh Fringe reviews for many years. In 2015 I was even on the comedy awards panel; a great honour and responsibility. Apart from writing novels I still write about football, cricket, rugby and tennis as well as contributing features to Rock Candy magazine - which celebrates rock music of the 70's and 80's. I run their Facebook page too.

These days I live on the west coast of Scotland with Dawn and a puss called Rabbie. When not writing I'm usually to be found growing food, digging holes, picking ticks off my skin and purring as I stroke some of my 7000 vinyl albums.
